Note
Anchorage Daily News (AK) - August 31, 2006 Deceased Name: FORMER RESIDENTS -- Winnie Gastfield, 91 -- Norm Gastfield, 96 Former Anchorage residents Norm and Winnie Gastfield died within two weeks of each other in June in Wenatchee, Wash. Mrs. Gastfield died June 17, 2006, of complications from cancer, and Mr. Gastfield died June 30, 2006, after falling at home. She was 91 and he was 96. Mrs. Gastfield was born Oct. 18, 1914, in Port Angeles, Wash. Always active in church, she was married and had four boys. Mr. Gastfield was born April 23, 1910, in Glenview, Ill. He was a professional salesman and carpenter. He came out West and married Winnie in 1951, at the age of 41. Family wrote: "Winnie often mentioned that it took a lot of courage to marry a woman with four boys! They spent their honeymoon on a deer hunting trip. Winnie always thought of Norm as 'the perfect husband.' They lived most of their early years in Entiat, Wash., near Wenatchee." They moved to Anchorage in 1990. The couple was featured in an article in the Daily News on Oct. 27, 2000, called "Soul Food," featuring their operation of a food bank out of their home. They enjoyed volunteering time with youths and adults, and gardening. They were members of Gideons International for more than 30 years. In 2003, the Gastfields moved back to Washington after the longevity bonus was terminated. "They were always ones to think of others," the family added. "In their home, there was always room at the table for one or two more. Their endless energy never failed as they fed the hungry, helped the poor, and housed the homeless. They reached out with whatever they had. They had many close friends in their church families, and throughout the country." They were preceded in death by a son, Michael Iler, in 1984. They are survived by their sons, Charles Iler, Bert Iler and Keith Gastfield, and their families. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, Box 242847, Anchorage 99524, or to a scholarship fund for the families' help, at the same address.
