Note | From information about Emily Elizabeth Holmes Johns: "Her father opened a hotel at Brighton in 1852, and in 1854 another one "Waverly House" in Sacramento. Gold dust was used to pay the miners' hotel bills. After her marriage, while living in Stonyford, Colusa County, it was necessary to get provisions from some larger place, and her husband would make these trips twice yearly with two big wagons and four or six horses. Once while he was away and delayed, the flour supply gave out, and Grandma (assumed to be Emily Elizabeth Johns) was forced to grind corn and wheat on the coffee mill in order to make bread for her family" Information from Native Daughters of the Golden West, Pioneer Roster/NDGW Archives.??"Her grandfather (should be father) was engaged in the hotel business in Sacramento, and then at Brighton, after which he went to Virginia City, Nevada, and was engaged in the general merchandise business."
